Sciatica

Sciatica is defined as low back pain that travels down to the buttock, the leg, and possibly even to the foot. Common causes of sciatica include a slipped or herniated disk, spinal stenosis, and injury. A nerve root in the lower spine is compressed, causing pain and numbness that travels along the sciatic nerve and affects the buttocks, legs, and feet.

Indicators of sciatica include:

  • Pain typically felt on just one side of the body
  • Ongoing pain as opposed to an intermittent pain
  • A pain that is worse in the leg and foot than it is in the back itself
  • May be accompanied by weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot
  • Pain is usually worse after long periods of time standing still or sitting, but it is somewhat relieved when walking
