Cervical Spinal Stenosis
Cervical spinal stenosis (in the neck) is one of the most common forms of spinal stenosis and occurs when the spaces in the spine narrow and create pressure on the spinal cord.
Aging and age-related changes in the spine, injury, other diseases, or inherited conditions can cause narrowing of the spaces. The condition can be dangerous as the spinal cord is compressed and may compromise coordination in the extremities.
For most people, symptoms develop and progress slowly over time. Cervical spinal stenosis can lead to serious issues, such as major body weakness and paralysis.
While some people may not experience any symptoms, the most common symptoms include:
- Tingling or weakness in the extremities
- Numbness
- Problems with walking and balance
- Incontinence
